Kicking Off to a Margic Carpet Ride
When Aladdin went into the cave, found the magic lamp, and eventually met the genie, everyone probably said, “sana all.”
To be given a genie and be granted three wishes is something almost all of us desire. I bet we already have something in our minds when we are asked, “What would your three wishes be?”
Cebu Normal University’s (CNU) Pop Jazz Dance Company left the audience in awe and wonder as they showed off their granted wish of a perfect Aladdin-inspired performance in the Opening Salvo of CNU Intramurals 2019.
The theme came from the bright mind of the group’s Dance Master John Adrian Suarez who generated the idea after watching the movie. But of course, such splendid performance would take much time, effort, and commitment to rehearse.
It took three weeks for them to practice and polish the dance. The group had also undergone hardships along the way. They struggled with the conflict between their classes and practices schedule and financial support for their costumes. On the third week of practice, some of the members even got sick with cough and colds. Nevertheless, the group was able to pull off the show.
“It’s a matter of time management between your academic studies and passion in dancing,” said Fairlei Russel, a second year BA Communication – Film Media student and a member of the dance company.
Aladdin may be lucky enough to have a genie to reach his dreams in just a snap of his fingers, but in reality, we all know it is never that easy. Just like how the CNU Pop Jazz Dance Company persevered to come up with such splendid performance, we also need to strive and endure to achieve our goals in life.
In this year’s Intramurals, every Normalite has many things he/she wishes to experience. But for the contestants, they only have one — to win and bring honor to their department and campus.
